Tribal Wars General Information

LAN. As in LANparty.
As in Local Area Network Party. What, you're still confused? You play
the game the way it was meant to played. No lag, just gameplay that works like
you expect it to.
Like the LANs that came before it, this
is going to be an all-out, no-hold-barred Tribes LAN party. What's new this
year? Well, we're building on the things we've done right - tournaments and a
great location - and adding a couple of new surprises this year. We're going to
have a couple of extra attractions yet to be announced that will just be more
and more reason to want to attend. Industry sponsors like Sierra are 100%
behind the event!
We'll have a lot of people you've heard
of but never met. You'll finally be able to see the face behind the name that
is either blasting you in the game or flaming you on the forum. And hey, if you
get tired of all that tribes-ing, we also have some of that indoor/outdoor pool
goodness for ya! Not to mention the 2-mile trail, the golf course, the two
restaurants, the bar...
East vs. West
A new wrinkle we're adding this year - building on our past history
as UVALAN - is the addition of a second, west-coast venue. The Tribal Wars East
location will be at the Chantilly, Virginia Westfields Marriott - a great,
proven, East Coast location. The Tribal Wars West location will be at the Los
Angeles Airport Marriott. Both locations are located minutes from the local
airport and expressways for easy access and have amazing, wonderful amenities
to keep you happy during your stay. Nearly identical ballrooms will house huge
numbers of rabid Tribers!
In addition to the planned tournaments held simultaneously in each
location, we plan a final, be-all-end-all East Versus West tournament final to
settle the brooding war which has existed since the beginning of the game.
Who's better? Who's got what it takes? Is it the brutal, no-holds barred East
Coast crew? Or is it the silent but synchronized, highly efficient and lethal
West Coast clan?
Tribal Wars will answer this question in July 2004.

Tournaments

We have a few tournaments tenatively scheduled, with
details to follow soon. We will likely do a mix of Tribes 1 and Tribes 2
tournaments with a strong possibility of a third tourney based on the new
Tribes:Vengeance public beta available at the time of the LAN party.
See our Schedule page for
the details on the tournaments and start times.

Costs

The entry fee for the LAN is $65. This price covers
all four days of gaming. To pay, use our registration link in the menu
above to register your information. We are accepting credit card payments/cash
via PayPal only for this event. Canadian and international
players, don't despair - PayPal accepts payments from Canada too.
Sorry, Tribal Wars is a pre-pay only
event . There will be no at-the-door registration. We do expect to
sell out the event, and seating is limited, so register early and get your
payment in, as we register on a first-come-first-served basis. Last year's
event sold out in one day flat!
Both the Virginia and California Marriott locations
are extending special rates to Tribal Wars attendees - and trust us, it's worth
it. These are premium rooms and the hotel has every amenity you would ever
want! Also, each of the rooms has two queen-size beds, so you might email some
folks and see if they'd like to share a room. The Westfields Marriott in
Chantilly will run $89 per night, and the LAX Marriott will be $94 per night.

What Do I Bring?

Well, you'll need to bring a computer. A computer is
the most important part of any LAN gaming system. Actually, we're going to
insist that if you intend to come to the conference and play, you need to bring
a computer. Well, OK, you can fly in and rent one if you need to but...you need
your own copy of Tribes 1/2 as well.
OK, seriously, bring your box. Bring a monitor - we
prefer 19" or smaller, but if a 21" is all you have, then don't send us your
chiropractor bills, OK? You'll need your keyboard, mouse, and joystick/input
device if you use one. Speakers are OK to bring, but keep this in mind - we're
going to be playing music through the PA system pretty constantly, so it might
be advisable to bring headphones. Plus you'll have the ability to actually hear
what's happening around you in the game, instead of just hearing your
neighbor's sound. We will also be enforcing a "polite" sound level at the
event.
We'll provide the LAN cabling, switches, and power
. We do ask that you bring a power strip/surge
suppressor to plug all of your items into.
Bring money for food and drink. People get hungry
playing videogames. Also, bring a sleeping bag, pillows, and blankies, if
you're sharing a room with like 40 other people.
Make sure to bring your CDs - for your operating
system, for your games, for your listening pleasure.
Last but not least: Bring a reciept for a pre-order of Tribes: Vengeance. Sierra
is allotting a seat on the private, closed beta of T:V for LAN attendees who
bring their pre-order reciept!

Tribal Wars FAQ

Q: I need to update my player information. How do
I do that?
A: Just log in. We've added the functionality of editing your
player account up until about three weeks before the event. You can change your
personal information, including tribe name, player name, whatever you'd like -
even sell your account to someone else and let them attend instead.
Q: I'm flying in. Can I rent a computer or
monitor?
A: Yes! We'll have some information up here pretty soon for you
on this.
Q: Can I sell my seat to someone else?
A: Sure. If you've registered, and you want to sell your seat
to someone else, make arrangements for payment. Once they pay you, give them
your login and password information for your Tribal Wars player account. They
can then log in, change the password and information, and the player name
they'll use. Note: We will stop allowing seat transfers
approximately 3 weeks before the event, so we can print up the badges. We
will not allow seat sales after this. *Note: The player database is now
locked, and we can no longer allow seat transfers. We apologize for the
inconvenience.
Q: I sold my seat to someone. Can they just show up and say they're me, and
get in?
A: No. All players will be required to show ID at the door upon
entrance to get an event pass. No exceptions.
Q: I don't want to play, or bring a computer even. Can I just show up and
hang out?
A: Technically, yes. We will allow a limited number of
seats for those bringing computers, actually. When you register, just indicate
on the form that you're not bringing a computer. The cost is the same. People
who are not bringing a computer are STILL eligible to win
prizes during our raffles and giveaways. Plenty of vendors will be on hand as
well tossing t-shirts into the crowd. So pay up, and show up!
Q: I'm under 18. Can I come?
A: Yes. We have hammered out the liability issues, and we will
now allow people under the age of 18 to attend. You must now be at least 15
years of age or older, and arrive with a signed and dated liability release
form. This form must be signed and dated by a legal guardian, and have complete
emergency contact information. Underage players must also bring a photo ID with
birthdate (school IDs are OK). You can download the form here:
Click Here To Download the Liability Form
Q: Can I bring my wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend?
A: Yes. They must pay for a registration like everyone else,
however. We request if they are not playing any games, however, that they
register as a non-computer bringer.
Q: Will there be an Internet connection at the event?
A: Yes. It is available in your hotel rooms at either Marriott
location. Public internet access is not available in the gaming room; the only
internet servers you'll be able to see will be at Tribal Wars East and Tribal
Wars West (and perhaps a central-US location for even ping).
Q: Can I rent a system/monitor for the event? I'm flying in and don't want
to ship it/carry it.
A: Yes. Paul Bratti at LAX Marriott, telephone 310-665-5938,
can help you at the TW: West location. Going to TW: East? Your contact info for
system and monitor rentals is Rick Croco at the Westfields Marriot, telephone
703-818-3691. If you're hoping to rent, contact these guys and let them know
you'll be there for the LAN party. They should be able to help out.

Rules and Regulations

Registration
-
Registration price is $65, and is good for entry into the gaming area, one
seat, power, and network connection at the event, and entry into various
contests. All sales are final. There are no refunds.
-
Players will be allowed to register for the event without paying, but until the
player has paid for their registration via PayPal, the player's registration is
not complete. Once registration is closed, payment for existing registrations
will no longer be accepted. There is no order in which registrations will be
accepted - whoever pays sooner gets their registration completed sooner.
Payments are processed in the order received.
-
Players who simply show up at the door at the event without registering will be
turned away. NO EXCEPTIONS. Players who register without
paying will also be turned away. Again, NO EXCEPTIONS. Please do not show up at
the event if you have not paid for a seat, whether you intend to play or not.
People who show up at the hotel, whether they enter the gaming room or not,
must be registered and paid participants. Visitors are not permitted.
-
All LAN attendees must show proof of identification at the
door. We require a driver's license or state ID card.
-
Players may attend the event without a computer, but this is strongly
discouraged! This is a gaming LAN.
-
Players may NOT bring guests with them- -unless that guest registers and pays
for entry into the event.
-
The event doors will open on Thursday, July 22, 2004.
Tribal Wars East doors will open at approximately 5PM, and Tribal Wars West
doors will open at approximately 2PM. Tribal Wars Staff are expected
to be at the venue to set up the event no later than 10AM the day of opening.
The Staff reserves the right to extend opening time until the venues are ready.
-
The hours of the event are:
-
Day one - opening until 4am
-
Day two - 10am until 4am
-
Day three - 10am until 4am
-
Day four - 10am until 2pm
Hotel reservations at the Marriott Westfields or at the LAX Airport Marriott are
strongly suggested. Room rates have been negotiated for this event at
$89/night and may be shared by up to 4 players without extra charge.
Extra cots and blankets are available for a nominal charge at the front desk.
Sleeping in the game room between the hours of 4am and 10 am is strictly
forbidden due to security concerns. The room will be closely checked
every night at closing for any "stragglers".
Seating
-
After entry into the event, player will be allowed to select a row to sit in
and will be helped by a Row Captain to set up their computer in terms of power
and network connections. Seating
is NOT reserved. Please be aware of this and assemble your teams for entry
appropriately.
-
There will be space set aside around the perimeter areas of the gaming room for
administration, merchandise, vendors, and internet shoutcast stations. Please
be mindful of the space these people need.
-
Each player will be assigned a network and power connection, to be attached by a
Row Captain. Players are forbidden from touching networking or power equipment:
Please find a staff member to assist in connecting you to power or network, or
troubleshooting an existing connection. Players are expected to bring their own
network interface card, category 5 cabling (minimum 20 feet), and surge
suppressor with appropriate numbers of outlets for their gear.
At the Event
-
All players are REQUIRED to wear their event badges at all times on the front
of their shirt between the belt and collar. If you are not wearing a badge in
the gaming area, you will be asked to leave, and return with your badge. Lost
badges cannot be replaced, so don't lose it. We'll provide a handy chain to
hang it on yourself with.
-
Your equipment is your responsibility, but in the interest of event security,
we are instituting a rule requiring you to leave your equipment in the room for
the duration of the event. This means that we will not permit you to take major
items out of the room (computers or monitors) unless you are departing the
event early.
-
Do not mess with anyone else's gear. It's a simple rule. If you are caught with
your hands in someone else's equipment, you'll be prosecuted to the full extent
of the law. Don't come to Tribal Wars to steal.
-
While at the event, all the computers will be on a single, unsecured network.
(No, there won't be an Internet connection.) It is your responsibility to
secure your computer! If there are important files on your computer, back them
up before coming to Tribal Wars. And please: unless you're invited to connect
to someone else's computer, stay out of it.
-
Tribal Wars servers and administrative computers are strictly off limits. Do
not touch them or connect to them for any reason other than to play using a
game client.
-
File sharing, while common, is not condoned by Tribal Wars staff. Please
practice responsible license management: don't copy a file that is copyrighted.
-
Do not display content on your screen that is inappropriate Adult-oriented
content is not permitted to be publicly displayed. Do not play adult-oriented
videos or display pornography on your screen while at the LAN.
-
You may bring speakers as long as the volume is kept at an acceptable level. We
seriously recommend headphones, however - the sound level in the gaming
area is usually not conducive to using speakers. By the time they're loud
enough to effectively play with, they're disturbing your neighbor. Please use
headphones.
-
Food, while allowed in the gaming area, is supposed to be purchased from the
hotel restaurant or staff. The
hotel has policies stating this. Please be courteous to your neighbors and
don't spill food or drink on their computer equipment or personal belongings.
-
There is no smoking allowed in the gaming area or in the hallway directly
outside the room doors. There is a smoking area right next to the gaming room,
however, that may be used.
-
Alcohol, as always, is NOT permitted in the gaming area. Cans of soft drinks,
bottles, coffee mugs, and other closeable containers are permitted in the
gaming area. Please consume your alcoholic beverages outside the gaming area.
Also, the hotel has a policy stating that all alcohol consumed on the premises
must be purchased from a hotel-hosted bartender.
-
A public display of drunkenness or other intoxication is instant grounds for
saying goodnight in the gaming area. Once you're done gaming and you're on to
drinking, do it outside the gaming area. We have little tolerance
for partiers making others uncomfortable in the gaming area - you may be
instantly ejected from the event either for the rest of the day or for the rest
of the event at the discretion of the administrative staff.
-
Please be nice to your fellow gamers. A little "trash talking" is welcome at
Tribal Wars. However, strong words, arguments, and fighting have no place at a
vacation many of us have saved money for. Complaints of verbal or physical
abuse are cause for ejection from the event. Physical altercations of any
kind will result in the ejection of all parties involved from both the gaming
area and the hotel. No exceptions.
-
Lastly, the ultimate authority for events taking place at Tribal Wars is
in the hand of the event organizers and the Marriott staff. ALL hotel policies
(including those concerning underage alcoholic consumption) are to be followed.
Tribal Wars organizers reserve the right to eject anyone, at any time, for any
reason, from the event. PLEASE follow this simple set of rules and we'll all
get along great and have a fun time.
-
Your courtesy and cooperation with these simple rules will
ensure that everyone has a great time at the
party. Even more importantly, it ensures that we will continue to have this
facility made available for events in the future. Thanks for your cooperation -
and have a fantastic Tribal Wars!
